A COMMUNITY

It is our mission to look after the communities that we operate in, which entails having a deep understanding of the needs of the indigenous people who reside in the area.

A project close to home and our hearts, we partnered with the Rays of Hope Ministries (RHM) to uplift the standard of living of the tribal population in the region. In a health check-up conducted in February 2017, the results revealed that numerous people were suffering from various ailments, which were most prominent in women and children.

Upon looking at it more closely, we collectively uncovered that the lack of potable water was the root cause for their ailments – A simple resource that we all take for granted

Despite a perennial river flowing through the village, industrial contamination has severely depleted clean water resources, leaving them only with wells far away from their homes.

The Problem

The women were forced to spend a quarter of their day going to get these wells to procure water for their families. This revealed an even bigger systemic problem because each of these women was accompanied by two young girls who were forced to forego their education to ensure that their homes had ample water to run a household.

Our Solution

Having seen the reality of the situation firsthand, we knew had to break the chain and lay the foundation for a better life, especially for the women and girls. We brought the water to them - all within proximity to their homes. Moreover, our system ensures that each resident of the village receives 75 litres of clean water a day.

by the people

Upon undertaking this project, we wanted to keep the people that it was serving at the very centre of it, ensuring their problems were heard, so we could create effective creative solutions for the same. We wanted to feel proud of what we have achieved, collectively.

Throughout the entire project, we brainstormed the location, the ideas and the execution together.

We also wanted to keep the entire project as locally sourced as we could. All the excavation and civic construction were undertaken by volunteers from the area, including all the materials and labour required to fulfil this project.

The project involved setting up an intake well on the banks of the river Patalganga. Which are accompanied by a fully automatic IS-10500 2012-compliant water treatment plant. Ultimately leading up to stand posts that provide clean water to Nimbode and Dandwadi.

From the beginning to completion, we worked closely with the Khalapur Nagar Panchayat. Whether it be demarketing the land required for the project, or gaining approvals from the PWD and Electricity Board – it was a collective effort to bring the Water Treatment Plant to life.

Today, the entirety of the Water Treatment Plant is operated and coordinated by locals, completely self-sustained.

The result
A socio economic
transformation

The project’s results were fruitful literally and figuratively.

The shared responsibility and collective effort to bring The Water Treatment Plant to life saw increased interaction between landowners, farmers and the panchayat leading to a synergy between the residents. Ultimately the project was built by the people and for the people and is also maintained by the people giving them a sense of ownership.

Apart from providing the land with clean water to cultivate crops and trees bearing fruit, women and girls who had earlier spent a quarter of their days fetching water are now able to contribute to their household income to raise the standard of living.
